AWP, which stands for "Another Word Processor", is currently a very basic
word processing system. The current version (1.3) is described below.
When creating a new file, you are asked for the top, bottom, left and right
margins. Each of these are described below.
Top margin. This is the line number you wan t printed output to start on.
A form feed will be sent to the printer after this line is printed.
Bottom margin. This is the last line number to be printed on a page.
A form feed will be sent to the printer after this line is printed.
Left & right margins. These margins are also effective on the display
as well as the printer.
When creating a new document, after the margin questions are answered, the
screen is blanked and the cursor appears at the left margin position of the
top line.
When editing an existing document that was created with this program, you
are not prompted for the margin settings. The document is read into memory
and the first 24 lines are displayed on the screen. The cursor is placed
on the top line, left margin.
It is possible to load documents that were not created by this program.
Howerver, the results may not be what you expected, due to differences in
how the text is stored. It is strongly recommended that you work with a
copy of your file first to see how it works.
At this point, operation is the same for new or existing documents. You can
enter text on top of whatever (if anything) is there. If you hit the right
margin while entering text, the cursor automatically goes to the left margin
of the next line. The cursor arrow keys can be used to go where ever you
want within the margins. If you are on the top line of the display and use
the up arrow, the display will scroll up one line. If you are on the bottom
line and use the down arrow, the display will scroll down one line.
The page up and page down keys will scroll the display up or down 24 lines.
Using the control key with page up or down will only move the display 12 lines.
The delete key will delete the character at the current cursor position.
The back-space key (the one just to the left of num lock) will do a destructive
backspace.
The insert key toggles the program's insert mode. If you are not in insert
mode (which is the way the program comes up) & the insert key is pressed,
the word "INSERT" appears at the bottom of the screen and the program goes
into insert mode. In this mode, any text entered in inserted at the current
cursor location, and the rest of the line is shoved down 1 character. If the
program is already in insert mode and the insert key is pressed, the word
"INSERT" disappears from the bottom of the screen and the program operates
normally.
When you exceed the right margin with a typed character, one of 3 things will
happen. If you exceed it with a space character, the cursor will go to the left
margin of the next line. If you exceed it with any other character and the next
line starts with a blank, the last word typed in is moved to the next line. If
the next line does not start with a blank, a blank line is created, and then
the word is moved. This feature is known as "word wrap".
The function keys are defined as follows:
F1 - Writes the document back to disk. Allows use of a different name
than th one used for loading. Exits to DOS afterwards.
F2 - Prints the document on LPT1.
F3 - Inserts a blank line at the line the cursor is on.
ShiftF3 - Inserts 10 blank lines.
F4 - Deletes the line the cursor is on.
F5 - Splits the line from the cursor position. Remaining
text is put on a new next line.
F6 - Reformats a paragraph. Pulls text up from next line
until current line is full. Continues until it reaches
a paragraph marker, which is a line with the first
character blank.
F7 - marks the line as the beginning line of a block.
ShiftF7 - marks the line as the ending line of a block.
F8 - copy a block of lines to the current cursor location.
F9 - Send a marked data block to a file.
ShiftF9 - Merge a file into the current one.
F10 - Immediate return to DOS. Does not save the document.
For those of you with the function keys defined to do something else, you can
also use ALT with the function keys to accomplish the same thing.
The program is currently limited to 200 lines of text.
Numerous enhancements are planned for the future. I would like to get some
feedback from users about the program in its present form before making
further changes.
If you are unable to get the .EXE module, you may obtain a copy by sending
a formatted diskette with a self addressed stamped mailer to:
